Centrally located the Clarence St Theatre is distinguished by it's Mondrian-esque exterior and a recently refurbished auditorium and foyer. It has a unique ability to transform from an outstanding drama theatre (550 capacity) to 'showroom mode' with table settings (280 capacity) or to a stand up concert space (590 capacity).
The venue offers full production facilities and services and has full catering facilities with in-house caterer Montana Catering with Showtime! This venue hosts countless drama, comedy and smaller concert events, and is ideal for corporate events, social functions and business seminars. There is also a Dance Studio/ Rehearsal Room backstage.
Recent events include Black Grace's new work Gathering Clouds. Christmas at Clarence St in showroom mode with the Topp Twins, Big Fat Jazz B*stards and New Zealand Comedy Xmas Showcase, Evermore and Hollie Smith standing concerts. Also in concert recently were Midge Marsden and Hammond Gamble and performances by comedian Jimeoin with his new show, , Laughing Samoans and a range of comedy shows.
Some outstanding drama in theatre mode has been Auckland Theatre Company's Four Flat Whites in Italy, Massive Company's Whero's New Net, Taki Rua’s Te Karakia and Strange Resting Places. Indian Ink's The Dentist’s Chair (2008) The Candlestick Maker and Krishnan's Dairy (2007) as well as being venue for the biennial Fuel Festival of New Zealand Theatre and Fuel Festival of New Zealand Music. This venue also hosts many diverse local productions and concerts.
