Founders Theatre is Hamilton's largest and best-known theatrical venue with a fully air-conditioned capacity of 1,249. Opened in 1961, the Founders is one of the most successful venues in New Zealand. Located on the triangular corner of Tristram Street and Norton Road, the Founders hosts a wide range of entertainment each year ranging from rock to symphony, country to comedy and ballet to ballads. It also performs an important Town Hall function for the city hosting many Civic and Institutional ceremonies. The venue provides full production facilities and catering services in attractive surroundings. There is also a rehearsal room backstage.

Recent events have included performances by Billy Connolly, and TheWiggles, and by artists as diverse as Geoff Sewell, The Ten Tenors, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Howard Morrison as well as many groups including OpShop, Dragon, The Dudes and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Regular subscription offerings include the Royal New Zealand Ballet and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and an outstanding local production of Cats recently completed a three-week season.
